This poster was extremely successful and received a prize at the 1896 International Poster Exhibition in Reims.

Apart from his skill in painting and drawing, Toulouse-Lautrec was an excellent lithographer and poster designer. This poster was created to announce the presentation of the Irish singer May Belfort at the Petit Casino in Paris in 1895. In it, the artist reflects the atmosphere of cafés-concerts, bordellos and night life in Paris, and is notably receptive to the influence of Japanese art, which was extremely fashionable at the time. The great quality of his poster production caused a great impact and became a model for the major artists in this new genre of artistic expression.
