Josep Llimona is considered to be the most genuine representative Catalan modernist sculpture. This work is a masterly synthesis of the symbolist vein in the modernist movement.

Josep Llimona, along with this brother Joan, founded the Sant Lluc Artistic Circle, an entity that brought together artists with strong Catholic and conservative convictions, such as Antoni Gaudí. This group opposed the renewal ideas of the first modernists to the extent of imposing rules as strict as prohibiting the nude. By the time the members of the Circle finally got around to modifying the rule, modernist sculpture had burst onto the scene, with the Desconsuelo quickly becoming a representative work. The perfect modelling of the female body, and particularly her melancholic and chaste aspect, contributed to further strengthening his adherence to the symbolism.
