Photograph taken by Agustí Centelles, which has become one of the most recognised icons of the fight to defend the Spanish Republic.

The photograph was taken on the first day of the uprising in Barcelona, and is part of the many representative photos taken by Centelles of the Spanish Civil War, who can be considered one of the pioneers of modern photojournalism. Many of his pictures show the rearguard in Barcelona, the bombings in Lleida, the front in Aragon and the Republican refugee camps in France.
