These wall paintings from a Romanesque church reflect the Classic style of one of the most acknowledged Baroque masters, Annibale Carracci.

In 1602, the Spanish noble, Juan Enríquez de Herrera, dedicated a chapel of the Santiago de los Españoles church in Rome to the Franciscan saint, Diego de Alcalá. Annibale Carracci, the great artist from Bologna, was commissioned to decorate the wall with a painting depicting scenes from the life of the saint. He started on the design of all the preparatory cartoons, but became ill while directing the on-site work in person. The work was finished by his collaborators, among whom were Giovanni Lanfranco, Sisto Badalocchio and Francesco Albani. The frescoes were stripped from the walls in the middle of the 19th century and are now distributed between the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) and the Prado Museum.
