This sculpture belongs to the group known as the “Beautiful Pities” and which correspond closely to the mystical texts of the time.

The Virgin is shown as childlike, wearing a tender expression and dressed in a mantle with numerous folds. The anatomy of the dead Christ is depicted with naturalism, although His position is rigid as described in such texts as the well-known “Revelations of the Virgin to Saint Bridget of Sweden”.

The iconographic subject of Pity stems from the popular Central European cult of the Virgin in the Maundy Thursday mass. This subject appeared in the late 14th century in Austria and Bohemia and spread successfully toward southern Europe.
