Un chien andalou

This film is key to understanding the nature and revolutionary scope of Surrealism, as well as the contribution of Spanish artists to this movement.

This video projection of the legendary film, which was jointly created by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, is conserved in the collection of the National Film Archive. Concepts such as 'rotting', ants, or the eye sliced open by the knife were conceived at that time, and were developed in the subsequent works of both artists. With this film, Buñuel and Dalí called into question the very existence of art as an institutionalised bourgeois discourse.

Surrealism is one of the best-represented historic avant-garde movements in the museum's collection, and film was an essential language which allowed the Surrealists to recreate the pillars of their theory: the power of the unconscious, dreams, the libido and the irrational.
