In 1922, Picabia distanced himself from the Dadaist movement in which he had been an active militant, and presented his new style of painting –of which this work is a prime example– in the Dalmau Gallery in Barcelona.

In this historic exhibition, Picabia included not only figurative pieces but also various paintings that could be described as geometric abstraction, such as “Totalisateur”. This was a series of extremely pared-down works featuring an innovative plastic concept which was based on geometry and took the circle as its starting point.

This painting therefore belongs to a significant period in the artist's career. Picabia at this stage produced a type of painting which was highly enigmatic, focusing on machines and mechanicism, and almost always provocative in its sexual symbolism as a result of his knowledge of Freudian theory.
