“Still life (Dead birds)” is a good example of Picassian cubism.
Cubism configures a new pictorial space where the object is defined from various viewpoints and is reduced to its most elemental geometric forms. The scheme of traditional perspective which considers the subject from a single point of view is thus abandoned. The preferred theme throughout this period (not only by Picasso but also by most of the Cubist painters) is still life in its multiple varieties, featuring a diversity of elements such as guitars, pipes, playing cards, wine glasses, plates or fruit bowls.
As shown in this painting, the works from this period do not set out to imitate reality but rather –following the new form of plastic expression championed by the movement– offer a different view of things, and tend to use a muted monochrome palette.
