Original title

Guardias de asalto en la calle Diputació, Barcelona

This photograph by Agustí Centelles was published in numerous foreign media, and became one of the most emblematic images of the Spanish Civil War.

Centelles covered the Spanish conflict right from the start, and would roam the streets, camera in hand, capturing images such as this: the assault guards in the Calle Diputació in Barcelona, on 19 July 1936. The photo shows members of the Republican police defending themselves using dead horses as improvised barricades.

Agustí Centelles was the great moderniser in Spanish photojournalism. He had an outstanding talent for photography and was able to exploit the technological advances of the time to revolutionise the photographic methods of his contemporaries. In his own words, he was 'the first graphic reporter to participate in politics through photography'.
