Cultural background

Original title

Five Seated Figures

"Conversation piece" (group portrait) represents Juan Muñoz's personal world.

The human figure appears activated by theatrical elements such as the mirror, suggesting voyeurism, narcissism and lack of communication.

Juan Muñoz's creative ability goes beyond sculpture and thanks to his versatility he has become one of the most original sculptors in the last third of the 20th century. And also, unlike other artists in his generation such as Robert Gober, Katharina Fritsch, Stephan Balkenhol and Thomas Schütte, he also kept formal consistency. Interesting literary, musical, film and philosophical references can be found in his works.
