Representation of Antinous, the young Bithynian slave of Hadrian, whom the emperor raised to divinity after his tragic death.

After the death of Antinous from drowning in the Nile, Hadrian ordered numerous effigies to him to be erected throughout the empire. This sculpture, of which the head, the torso and part of the limbs still survive, is a faithful representation of the stereotype created to perpetuate the memory of Antinous.

The piece is from the Roman villa of Els Munts (Altafulla). Very few portrayals of this personage have been found in the private sphere. On placing it in the villa of Els Munts, the owner of the mansion possibly wished to give evidence of his loyalty to the emperor.
