Original title

Prensa de tostado

Ourense, Galicia

Small press used to make toasted wine, the most appreciated and valued production in the O Ribeiro wine-producing tradition.

Grape presses in general are used to process the marc, that is, the leftover peel, wood, and grape seeds after being squashed. This press, however, has a specific purpose: producing toasted wine. Raisins are used for this wine. Carefully selected grapes are set apart and duly dried. When they reach their optimal condition they are pressed with this tool, to get grape juice.

Toasted wine was - and still is - considered exquisite. It was reserved for special occasions.
