Cultural background

Original title

Virgen de Boixadors
Episcopal Museum of Vic
Barcelona, Catalonia

This is one of the most outstanding pieces in the museum's collection of Gothic sculpture. It is also a magnificent example of the Marian iconography of the Gothic period.

In contrast with the Romanesque virgins, which are characterised by being sedentary enthroned figures with a majestic aura, the Gothic representations of the Virgin underline Mary and Jesus' humanity, but without renouncing their theological symbolism.

Thus Mary's gestures express a mother's typical tenderness, and Jesus appears to be playing and moving near Mary's head. This apparently innocent gesture is at the same time a symbolic evocation of Mary's coronation. Stylistically the Virgin of Boixadors is closely related to the Virgin of Sallent de Sanaüja, which is conserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC).
