Apparel worn by Ramón y Cajal in Cuba when working as a military medical officer.

Typical uniform of the Spanish troops in the overseas provinces during the second half of the 19th century. It was worn by the medical officer Santiago Ramón y Cajal when he was posted to the Cuban War of 1874, where he remained until the following year. The surviving uniform consists of a military jacket, with metallic buttons bearing the initials 'SM', for 'Sanidad Militar', and a hat made of plant fibre known as a jipi-japa, with a small button with the coat of arms of the 1st Spanish Republic.
