An extraordinary painting that shows Goya’s work as a portrait artist. The subject’s character is depicted through the objects we see in the scene.

It is a portrait of Ferdinand VII dating to 1815 and a propaganda work for the monarchy. It is richly coloured, in combinations of red, black and gold. Particularly noticeable are the dense, free and quick brushstrokes used in braids, decorations and the sword.
