A portrait of Alfonso V which includes Flemish influences, uses vibrant colours from Raphael and is inspired by the classical world.

It was commissioned by the courts of the city of Valencia from Juan de Juanes, son of the also important artist, Vicente Masip.

The monarch appears as an example of virtues, according to Renaissance models. In this sense, King Alfonso V wears armour and under the royal crown we can see an open book emphasising the monarch’s characters as a man of letters. The painting is finished with allegorical references to the Kingdom of Aragon.

The portrait was painted after the monarch’s death (1557), based on a work by Pisanello
