Zaragoza, Aragon

An essential work of art for understanding Goya's chronological evolution. It provides a critical and caustic view of Aragón and, by extension, of the education system of the time.

A small painting of a school scene in which the teacher is about to whip a pupil. The light, which is very significant, is shining in through a large window and lighting the main scene - the pupil who is being punished. The artist is depicting and condemning the defective children's education, which he also depicts in other works such as the prints "Caprices".
An X-ray of the canvas shows that the artist was reusing it after drawing a sketch of the Regina Martyrum dome in the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pilar This work is connected with other small works inspired by the series of cartoons for tapestries, including the six paintings from the "Child's play" series.
