A work which won Goya an honourable mention from the Parma Academy of Fine Arts.

The painting reproduces the story taken from a sonnet written by Abbé Frugoni, which Goya pictorially resolves with different views which come together in the centre of the work. Through a spiral arrangement of the characters, the artist provide narrative movement and constructs a charged atmosphere full of many nuances.

The painter made several studies for the final composition of the work. These sketches appear alongside a preparatory drawing in the so-called "Italian Book", a notebook used by Goya during his stay in Italy between 1770-1786, housed at the Prado Museum.
