Cultural background

Original title

Toledo, Castile-La Mancha

Important example of megalithic art in the province of Toledo.

This is a 3-dimensional anthropomorphic representation. A serpent is coiled round the whole body of the figure. Its head may correspond to the figure's eye; this figure may have carried a staff and a trowel, carved into one of the sides. The back is decorated with indentations.

It stood at the entrance to the circular chamber of the dolmen and would have been visible from the corridor. Most of the slabs which formed the chamber have disappeared. These spaces were used for collective burials, and the presence of these anthropomorphic statues in some dolmens such as the once at Navalcán are thought by specialists to establish differences of a ritual nature, or else indicate the burial of an important person, or of a particular social group.
