This painting was finished the year before El Greco died and is considered to be one of the artist's greatest masterpieces, his "aesthetic testament" synthesising all his work to date.

A very imposing Mary, dressed in a red tunic and a blue cloak, is suspended in a heavenly atmosphere. The angel connects the image of Mary with the world below, which is depicted on the left, with a view of the city of the Toledo.

Several specialists have highlighted how Mary is ascending. Both figures follow winding lines and movements, starting from the bunch of the flowers underneath, moving up along the angel's feet, and ending in Mary's face.

The piece is in the chapel founded by Doña Isabel de Oballe in the Church of San Vicente, in Toledo.
