Toledo

This image is representative of Gothic sculpture and belongs to the Santa Cruz Museum collections.

The Christ of the Light was situated in the upper part of the altarpiece in the high altar in the Cristo de la Luz shrine. Later on it was moved to the Parish Church of San Nicolás in Toledo, which gave it to the Santa Cruz Museum.

It is a painted wood carving made at the end of the 13th century. The cross is not the original one - it has been reused, and the nails were introduced later on. Although tradition has it that it is the image of Christ that Alfonso VI found on entering Toledo, it probably refers to an image made before this one.
