Minorca, Balearic Islands

This is a Palaeo-Christian capital from the Basilica of Cap des Port (Fornells-es Mercadal).

It preserves the mould of the Corinthian capital, but its lines have been outlined. As with the centre of the flat faces, a total of nine crosses have been engraved on the ends of what were volutes which, originally, were painted red.
A well-organised Christian community is documented in Minorca in the 5th century, seen, amongst other things, through the series of rural churches.
