This is one of the works from the great masters collection of the Order of Malta.

It represents the flight of Paris and Helen from Sparta to Troy. The idealized figures are correct, bur with heavy proportions and forced attitudes. The technique emphasises energy, while the Tenebrist use of dark and light is most effective.

The scene follows the account of the Trojan war in Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”, with iconographical allusions typical of the Baroque. The artist, Mattia Preti, worked in Malta for the Cotoner family of Majorcan merchants, who were members of the Order of Malta.
