It is one of the most important elements produced in the workshop of Master Mateo, architect and sculptor of the medieval cathedral of Santiago, who also made the Pórtico de la Gloria doorway.

During the third construction phase of Santiago Cathedral, documented between 1168 and 1188, a large granite choir was made, which would be placed in the first four sections of the central nave. From an iconographic point of view, the choir represented Heavenly Jerusalem, and this fragment was actually one of the towers of the city. In 1604 it was disassembled to build another one made of wood. Some of the parts were reused in several places of the cathedral, such as the figures of the apostles, evangelists and prophets on the Holy Door. Other parts have been used to carry out a full reconstruction of the choir.
