Susana y los viejos

This painting displays the creative capacity and mastery of Rubens when he was still only 30 years old.

It depicts a Biblical scene of this name from the Book of Daniel, also called "Chaste Susanna". A young woman resists the propositions of two lecherous men who have secretly entered her garden to surprise her while she was bathing. On her refusal to submit to them, they accuse her of adultery. As they are two highly respected judges, no one doubts their world. However, a young man called Daniel reveals their calumny and saves Susanna from death by stoning.
The painting is dated to the Italian period of Rubens, who despite his youth was already a master. In it, he applied what he learned from classical sculpture and the influence of Rafael, Michelangelo, Titian...
