San Bruno

A sculpture of the founder of the order of the Carthusian Monks that was rescued 180 years ago when a historic building was demolished.

In Madrid, the Carthusians of El Paular opened a guest house and placed this image of the founder of their order in its facade.
Pereira was a great master who worked in both stone and wood. He is the author of another famous “Saint Bruno” in wood, in the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores (Burgos). He was almost 65 when he made the one now at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts. The work was admired by Philip IV, who asked his carriage to stop so that he could look at it.
It was moved to the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts when the guesthouse was demolished during the sale of church lands of 1836.
