This photograph shows a young gypsy girl and is quite unlike the usual depictions of gypsies in the 19th century.

The young girl is shown without any of the usual attributes of her race. Her head is turned and she wears a wistful expression. She is dressed in a plain and simple style. In contrast with this photograph, other contemporary portraits of women, some by the same photographer, José García Ayola, show gypsy woman posing in the studio, adorned with the typical richly embroidered shawls and wearing elaborate and brightly patterned costumes.

This image is part of a series of about 300 taken by José García Ayola which can be seen in the museum.
