Legends of Andalusian Romanticism

Small terracotta sculpture of a kind known as “barros” which were the most important type of craft produced in 19th century Granada.

This is the highlight of the sculpture collection. It portrays a bandolier, seated on a pile of rocks covered by a cloth, leaning on tree trunk and accompanied by a dog. The character is wearing the classic dress featured in the romantic descriptions of Andalusian bandoliers. These were literary protagonists of adventures in Spain penned by European writers of the time. The stories are normally set in the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda and Sierra Morena. This piece is rather larger than was usual for this type of figure, and is also unusual in that it is not polychrome.
