Pila de Almanzor

Granada

This font from the Almanzor Palace, in Cordoba, was reused in the Alcazaba fortress in the Alhambra.

The piece has symbolic decor. On each of the longer sides there is a small tree of life in the centre. At either side of the tree there is a deer and a goat being attacked by lions. The scene is framed at the top and side by a border with inscriptions in italics. The other long side is decorated similarly, except for the border, which is replaced with water birds.

On the narrower sides the surface is divided in three parts: the central part, smooth and polished, and the sides, with eagles, lions and plant motifs. Because of its size, shape and ornamentation, the font was probably situated in the centre of a courtyard.
