Cultural background

Original title

Panel de alicatado nazarí
The Alhambra Museum
Granada, Andalusia

Tiled panels like this one were used to decorate the lower parts of the walls in Nasrid palaces. Plaster decorations were placed on these strips of tiles.

The decorations are organised into horizontal strips. The upper plasterwork frieze has inscriptions in italics repeating a short fervent prayer: "The power is God's, the glory is God's, the might is God's". The ceramic section is framed by two intertwining bands, producing multiple octagonal shapes in blue, green, black and gold on a white background.

The main part of the skirting board consists of a geometric pattern of large rosettes cut in half. This panel probably comes from the south room in Comares Palace, and was reused as a skirting board in the Mexuar Room, with adaptations by Moriscos, probably made with pieces by the artisan Juan Pulido, in Seville.
