This was Murillo's last commission before his death. It was produced for the convent of the Capuchin friars in Cádiz.
The work shows the saint kneeling in the foreground, with his arms outstretched and looking at the crucified Christ, who appears to him as a Seraph surrounded by a golden halo. The saint is portrayed dressed in a Franciscan Order habit, barefoot and with the palms of his hands marked by the stigmata. A cross, a book and a skull lie on the rocky ground in front of him. Brother León is shown in the background lying on the ground with his right hand lifted in a gesture of amazement.
