Cultural background

Original title

Estatuilla de Hércules Gaditano
Cadiz Museum
Cadiz, Andalusia

This statuette poses a series of dating and attribution problems, given that there is no archaeological context

All Hercules' strength and vigour can be seen in this piece, holding the three apples from the Garden of the Hesperides in his right hand. Most researchers date it back to the Late Roman Empire. In this case it would be a small scale replica of the statue of Melqart-Hercules in the famous temple of Cadiz. There is also enough evidence to believe it dates from the 5th century BC.

The letters H.G. would refer to the offering character of the piece to the shrine and its belonging to the actual deity of Hercules Gaditanus.
