This altarpiece is the most complete set of works by the Florentine artist Gherardo Starnina. It is one of the world's most exquisite and finely-detailed works in the Gothic style.

The piece was commissioned by Friar Bonifacio Ferrer, brother of San Vicente Ferrer, when he entered the Carthusian monastery of Portacoeli after being widowed. The central panel shows the crucifixion of Christ, surrounded by the seven sacraments. The left panel depicts the conversion of Saint Paul, and the right panel, the baptism of Christ. The series is completed with scenes of the Annunciation and the Final Judgement at the top. On the predella (lower horizontal element) Fray Bonifacio Ferrer is depicted with his family: his sons on the far left and his deceased wife and daughters on the right.

The artist, Gherardo Starnina, made a profound imprint on the configuration of Gothic art, both in Florence and in Valencia.
