This is one of the few works by Van Dyck existing in Spain outside the collections in the Prado Museum and the National Heritage.

This magnificent equestrian portrait of Francisco de Moncada, the third Marquis of Aytona, highlights the artist's skill in creating this type of portrait. The painting shows Francisco de Moncada mounted on a white horse with a long mane and tail, and with a bearing that indicates the importance of his personage (he was governor general of the Netherlands and had an outstanding military and diplomatic career).

The figure is set in a lush landscape which opens out towards the right, with a sky depicted in the Flemish style which acts as a foil to the authority of the personage. There is another identical version by the same artist in the Musée du Louvre.
