Together with the self-portrait that the artist included in the painting 'Las Meninas', this work is the only likeness Velazquez painted of himself which is universally accepted by the critics.

It was produced in Rome at the height of his career, when Velázquez depicted himself as he must have appeared at the age of fifty. On a neutral dark background, he is shown in head and shoulders, with only his face illuminated, highlighting his intense and somewhat mysterious gaze.

The austerity of this self portrait suggests a reflection by the artist on the ravages wrought by the passage of time on one's person, or maybe the awareness of the historic destiny of the Kingdom.
