Together with the painting entitled Head of apostle, this is the only work by Diego Velázquez conserved in the museum.

This painting is a testament to Diego Velázquez's outstanding skill as a portraitist. It was painted in around 1620 and portrays Don Cristóbal Suárez de Ribera, a Sevillian cleric and founder of a religious brotherhood dedicated to Saint Hermenegild, whose emblem can be seen on the left.

During his years in Seville, Velázquez used the chiaroscuro technique in his genre paintings and still lifes, subjects which already had precedents in Flemish and Italian painting. With his exceptional mastery of drawing and a subdued palette, he achieved extraordinary levels of realism. He also undertook works in two other genres in which this realistic tone can clearly be seen: religious paintings and portraits.
