The temptations of Saint Jerome is considered to be one of the best versions of this theme in European Baroque painting.

In this painting, the moral energy and the saint's rejection of temptation are transferred to the technique, which is confident, with energetic brushstrokes and vivid colouring, and yet is still capable of accurately depicting details.

It belongs to a series of 18 canvases painted around 1657 by Juan Valdés Leal, which portray episodes from the life of Saint Jerome, and extol the history of his monastic order with the presentation of its main members. The series was painted to decorate the sacristy of the convent of San Jerónimo de Buenavista in Seville.
