This is probably the most famous and best loved of Gonzalo Bilbao's paintings on social themes.

The work dates from 1915 and can be considered an example of the costumbrista style (featuring depictions of local customs), and is both regionalist and symbolist at the same time. Taking as its forerunner the The Spinners by Velázquez, the composition is set in the Tobacco Factory in Seville, where one of the cigar girls, seated in the foreground, takes a break from her work to feed her baby.

This maternal scene draws the attention of her closest companions, thus creating a warm, relaxed and convivial atmosphere, while the rest of the workers continue with their routine work, making cigars.
