According to legend, this splendid Limoges enamel was the campaign altar of Grand Captain Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, who served the Catholic Monarchs.

It comprises six panels mounted as a triptych. The three lower panels are inspired by the etchings of Dürer and other Renaissance artists. They depict three scenes from the Passion: Christ carrying the cross, Christ crucified between the two thieves, and a Stations of the Cross. The three upper panels (rougher in design) also show a number of scenes. The central panel shows Christ, as Lord of the Earth at the Final Judgement, accompanied by the Virgin and Saint John. In left panel, the Heavenly City is represented by a medieval castle. In the right panel, the souls of sinners are led by devils to the hell’s door.
