Works such as this are evidence of the way in which painting in the late 19th century took on new subjects of a social nature which were a testament to Spain's situation at the time.

Rafael Romero de Torres, the eldest of the artist sons of Rafael Romero Barros, trained at the provincial School of Fine Arts in Cordoba and obtained grants from the Provincial Council to study in the School of San Fernando in Madrid and in Rome. This work was sent to the Council in 1890 in lieu of payment for the grant, and addresses the theme of the working conditions at the time. It is part of a trilogy of works on themes such as unemployment and emigration, which demonstrate a deep sense of social criticism, and mark him out as one of the key figures in the Spanish movement known as the Generation of 98.
