This piece, typical of 18th century Córdoba Baroque, is important for its value and its author, who was court painter to Carlos II and a treatise writer.

The canvas shows an episode from the life of Christ described in the Gospels and closely follows the example set by Lucas Jordán in the San Lorenzo Monastery at El Escorial. It is thought to belong to a series on the childhood of Christ, as the various copies and replicas preserved in Córdoba seem to suggest.
The artist, Palomino, received major commissions across the length and breadth of Spain, and he also wrote about painting technique as well as biographies for some of the most exceptional Spanish artists who preceded him.
