One of the most important pictorial undertakings in Cordoba from 1600 was the production of paintings for the new cloister of the Franciscan convent of San Pedro el Real.

This is a series of works which illustrate the life of Saint Francis and were painted by various local artists in Cordoba, including Antonio del Castillo and Juan de Alfaro, and sponsored by private citizens. This painting is an example of the healthy rivalry existing between the two artists; this is demonstrated by the way in which they signed their first commissions, as described by Antonio Palomino in his publication of the biographies of earlier Spanish artists. It represents the moment when, as water is about to be poured over the head of the newborn and future saint, an angel lifts the child nearer the font and then disappears, leaving the marks of his knees on the ground.
