In this sculpture Gargallo places en empty space where there traditionally used to be mass.
The sculpture is made of bronze from an original iron one. Gargallo would turn flat sheet metal into volumetric shapes that used space and incorporated it into the composition. Onlookers must vary their position in order to observe all the shapes that the artist draws with these sinuous lines. In this case, it is a portrait of the painter Marc Chagall, which, as well as his profile, includes a figure inside, which can be interpreted as his thoughts. The figure coincides with the image of a woman in a long dress, with a veil and a bouquet, who appears in his paintings, modelled by his own wife.
