A significant event in history painted by Juan and Miguel González, the most famous "enconchado" artists.

The theme developed in this painting, which belongs to a set of 24 boards made with the "enconchado" technique (fragments of mother-of-pearl embedded in the wooden surface, and soft layers of paint are added to the shiny surface), depicts the delegation made up of Emperor Moctezuma and his noblemen, organised to meet Hernán Cortés and welcome him on his entrance to the city of México-Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital. This part of the Conquest of Mexico was narrated by several chroniclers who inspired authors of several painting series. The whole set was a commission for King Charles II and was part of the royal collections from the beginning of the 18th century.
