Depiction of the ecstasy of Saint Francis on Mount Alvernia according to the story in the book “The Flowers of Saint Francis”

El Greco painted at least three works representing the ecstasy of Saint Francis on Mount Alvernia, when he received the stigmata or wounds of Christ on the palms of his hands. The iconography of the saint (bearded and haggard) dates from after the Council of Trent, when he was no longer portrayed with a serene, contented appearance.
