This drawing –possibly a rough sketch– in pen and aquatint, depicts the fall of Phaeton, the character from Greek mythology, on both the back and front.

Phaeton, the son of Helios, throws himself from a height, and falls outside the chariot of the Sun, onto the symbolic figure of the Eridanos river, who is in the centre of the composition, reclining against an urn on which a child is also leaning. On the right is a sleeping nymph, and beside her a cherub who is lifting the veil covering her, on which is a handwritten notation by the author which reads 'cinabrio'. Tiépolo's signature can be seen beneath the central figure. On the reverse of the drawing there is a sketch of the same subject consisting of foreshortened human figures and horses.
