The distinctive features of this work are the exceptional rendering of the texture of the objects, and the fact that they are shown from below, as though the painter had been sitting very close to them.

These are common attributes in the work of Luis Meléndez, thought by many to be the most outstanding Spanish still-life painter of the 18th century.

The viewpoint in the picture suggests that the painter worked seated very near the elements depicted. His still lifes are notable for their minute detail and the plastic quality of the objects, his preference for spherical fruits –shiny and free from defects–, and his capacity for representing numerous and varied elements in a very limited pictorial space.
