Original title

Busto de Ganímedes

This item, discovered in the Alhambra, is a Roman copy dating from the 2nd-3rd century AD of the original Greek bust from the classical period in the 4th century BC.

The work reminds us of sculptures by Praxiteles, such as Apollo Sauroctonos. It probably belonged to a larger group of sculptures, like those which usually represent Ganymede's kidnapping by Zeus. The young man's head, tilted slightly forward, is wearing a Phrygian cap (from the country of Phrygia in ancient Asia - its style would later on become the emblem of French revolutionaries and Spanish Republicans).

His torso is half naked, covered only with a chlamys (a short cape that the Greeks used when horse riding). The sculpture was discovered in the Alhambra in the 16th century, where it remained until the 19th century, when it was taken to the museum.
