Original title

Astrolabio de Ibn Zawal

This astrolabe from Granada is one of the forty preserved in the world. The Moors used this instrument to make astronomical and astrological calculations.

The astrolabe is a precision instrument that was used as an observatory and as an astronomical calculation abacus. It is made up of a circular plate framed by a metal ring or mater, so that the surface of the interior space is smaller. The rete with arrows rotates and has small silver buttons that show the position of certain stars and heavenly bodies.

The alidade is on the back, which is the guide to carry out the observations. The astrolabe was probably invented by the Alexandria school, maybe by Hipparchus or Ptolemy.
