Cultural background

Original title

Alabastrón egipcio

The Phoenician-Punic necropolis of Laurita, in Almuñécar, stands out because of the quality of its items. This type of amphora, which was possibly manufactured in Thebes (Egypt), is one of them.

It is an elongated ovoid Egyptian alabastron with two handles and rounded base. It was initially used as a wine vessel. Next to the handles there is a hieroglyphic inscription that goes around the object, with the cartouche of Takelot II. The inscription refers to the joyful act of wine related to Osorkon, the person receiving the liquid contained in this exception vessel.

The amphora was part of the grave goods in tomb 15 in the Laurita necropolis. The item went from being a container for luxury products to an urn for the deceased's ashes.
